Hail to Georgia by The Redcoat Band and Men’s Glee Club of 1955

The part about how the Redcoats got their name is very interesting! (In bold below)

Originally started in 1905 as a section of the UGA Military Department, the University of Georgia Redcoat Band has grown in the last 100 years from 20 military cadets to over 350 men and women covering almost every major at the University. The band’s first non-military performance was not at a football game, as many would think, but the 1906 Georgia-Clemson baseball game! For the first twenty five years of its existence, the band members split their time (albeit not evenly) between their studies, their military drill, the band, and the athletic events they were required to play at (including baseball games, which eventually released the band from their duties). It was also during this time that the fight song “Glory Glory to Old Georgia,” composed by former bandsman and future head of the Music Department Hugh Hodgson, made its debut.

At a Georgia Tech game in the late 1900s, a reporter for the Atlanta Journal, not knowing the new Georgia fight song, kept constantly complaining about “the incessant playing of ‘John Brown’s Body.’” (While it is interesting to note that the main Georgia fight song is modeled after “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” that song was actually based on the 1859 song about the abolitionist known for taking over the US arsenal at Harper’s Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia).

In 1955, the Redcoat Band as we know today was formed by the arrival of Roger Dancz and his wife Phyllis, who was to become the Director of the Auxiliaries. Before Roger’s arrival, the band was known simply as the Georgia Marching Band. There are several stories as to how the Redcoats got their name (other than their uniforms, of course). One version has an Atlanta reporter writing about a joint concert among the bands of Georgia and Georgia Tech. While the Tech band was known as the “yellow-jacketed band,” the reporter found it necessary to dub UGA’s band as “the red-coated band.” The name stuck and by the time Roger and Phyllis arrived, the University of Georgia Dixie Redcoat Band was formed. With the arrival of the Danczes, the band began to grow in size and perform more elaborate halftime shows during the 1960s and 70s.

In 1959, Phyllis Dancz formed the “Georgettes,” a dance line that performs alongside the band during the pre-game and halftime shows. Later on, the Bulldog Banners, later to be called the Georgia Flag Line, was formed to add color and motion to the halftime show.

Heartwarming Tearjerker of the Day: University of Georgia junior outfielder Johnathan Taylor was partially paralyzed earlier this year after colliding with teammate Zach Cone during a game against Florida State. Today Taylor — who is not yet able to walk on his own — was picked by the Texas Rangers in the 33rd round of the MLB draft.
“We thought selecting Johnathan was the right thing to do,” Rangers’ director of amateur scouting Kip Flagg said in a statement. “We would have drafted him either way, regardless of any other circumstances involving his injury or Zach’s draft status.” (Cone was drafted by the Rangers on Monday.)
“Our area scout in Georgia, Ryan Coe, has had a relationship with Johnathan since he was a high school player,” Flagg’s statement went on to say. “The club has always liked his passion and ability as a player. … Taking Johnathan in the draft today, it was something we felt was right.”
Taylor, who broke his neck and bruised his spinal cord in the collision, still has plenty of rehabilitation work ahead of him, and his doctor told ESPN he was unlikely to regain full use of his legs.
But, for the moment, his spirits couldn’t be higher. “When I talked to him after he got the call,” said Georgia coach David Perno, “he was in the middle of his rehabilitation work, laughing and having a good time and was thrilled to be drafted.”
The Rangers weren’t alone in their heartfelt gesture of support: Seven rounds after Taylor, the Houston Astros drafted San Jacinto College reliever Buddy Lamothe, who was paralyzed in a diving accident last month.

Only in Tumblr’s sports community would the MLB draft get more coverage than the NCAA revoking USC’s 2004 National Championship.

Which unless I am mistaken is the first title abolished in a major sport since Shoeless Joe Jackson and the 1919 World Series.

BCS strips USC of 2004 title →

The history books will now show that nobody won the BCS title during the 2004 season. The 2004 BCS title won by USC has been taken away by the Bowl Championship Series.

USA Today reports that the Trojans were stripped of the right to call themselves 2004 BCS champions in what could be one of the final chapters in the Reggie Bush drama. It is the first time a program has been stripped of a BCS title and is the first national title in college football or basketball to be vacated since the beginning of the usage of polls to determine a champion.

The SEC dominates the list with six out of the twenty coaching jobs, more than the Big XII and the ACC combined. Can’t say that I agree with Oklahoma being above all other schools in our conference or with Arizona or Arizona State being on this list at all but alas this is not my list.
